The Battle of Ourchmedhas 27 September 1956

Description

Ain Zaatout, also known as Beni Ferah, is a municipality in the district of El Kantara, in Biskra Wilaya. It is located on the southern slopes of the Aurès Mountains, between the wilayas of Batna and Biskra, in eastern Algeria.

The municipality is bordered to the south by El Branis and Djemoura, to the east by M’Zira and Menaa, to the west by El Kantara, and to the north by Maâfa and Thakoust.

Owing to its geographical location at the southern foothills of the Aurès Mountains, Aïn Zaatout occupies a distinctive position within the historical and geographical setting of the region.

History

The events of this battle took place in the municipality of Aïn Zaatout, located in the northern part of Biskra Wilaya. The region is distinguished by its strategic location and rugged mountainous terrain, which made it a secure transit route for the moudjahidine. It was also the site of numerous battles and armed clashes, including the Battle of Ourchmedhas.

One of the main causes of the battle was information provided to the colonial authorities concerning a meeting to be held within the Aïn Zaatout kasma, attended by officials from the neighbouring areas of M’chouneche, Djemorah and El Kantara, in the presence of Ben Boulaïd. The colonial authorities assumed that the person concerned was Commander Mostefa Ben Boulaïd and therefore mobilised substantial forces and military equipment. This indicates that they were not yet aware of his death.

The preparedness of the moudjahidine nevertheless turned the confrontation into a fierce battle, despite the considerable imbalance in military strength. The moudjahidine were equipped with weapons referred to as “Khomassi,” “Statti” and “Achari,” while the enemy forces deployed aircraft and heavy weaponry.

Although 76 martyrs fell, including the two chahidate Ourida and Ounassa Ouragh, the battle was considered a highly successful engagement, particularly in view of the losses inflicted on the enemy forces.

Among the material testimonies preserving the memory of the enemy’s losses during this battle are the remains of an aircraft known as the “Yellow Aircraft,” which the moudjahidine succeeded in shooting down. These remains are displayed in the exhibition hall of the Regional Museum of the Mujahid in Biskra and are also commemorated at the Martyrs’ Garden in the municipality of Aïn Zaatout.
