History

On Wednesday, 30 January 1957, the moudjahidine ambushed a French military convoy at a place known as Ain Es-Sayd, in the municipality of Djemoura, Biskra Wilaya. The operation was led by the moudjahid Senani Khelifa, in the presence of Bougrara Lakhdar, Salami Abderrahmane, Zeli Ibrahim, Abdeli Abdelaziz and Ahmed Karmiche. It was around one o’clock in the afternoon when the military convoy, coming from the village of Béni Souik, reached the area.

The ambush, carefully prepared by the moudjahidine, inflicted heavy losses on the enemy forces, with 35 reported dead and wounded. The casualties were evacuated by helicopter to the city of Biskra and taken to Lavigerie Hospital, now known as Hakim Saâdane Hospital.

At midday the following day, the colonial forces mobilised different military units, surrounded the locality and attempted to enter several homes. Sensing the danger, the inhabitants closed the doors of their houses. The enemy forces then broke down the doors and entered the homes, killing around twelve people, including men, elderly people, women and children. Many inhabitants were also gathered and taken to the regroupment camp.
